The hemet veolians, colloquially known as hemets, are a subspecies of the Veolian species. The occurance of hemets is due to a peculair genetic mutation that triggers large physiological changes during puberty. The hemet mutation is present in each Veolian, but is only expressed in roughly 10% of the population. Once the mutation is triggered the veolian experiences multiple outburst of psychic energy that is quite harmful to anything in their immediate vincinity. Once the mutation ran it's course, the individual's appearance does not appear changed; but looks can be deceiving.
Hemet Veolians are better than normal Veolians in all ways; so much even that they were worshipped as incarnate gods in the early history of the species. They have enhanced intellectual capacity, capable of conciously directing part of their brain to alternate paths of thought. Due to their vastly changed brain structure, hemets lose the ability to sleep or dream.
Hemets also experience vastly increased physical prowess, both their strength exceeding three times the normal physical prowess of a Veolian and an increase of their fine motor control. The body of a Hemet is capable of withstanding enormous forces, and a fall that would kill a normal Veolian or human will most likely see the Hemet as little injury as a few broken ribs.
The genetic mutation carries with it another benefit: Hemet Veolians are very long lived. Verified ancient texts describe rulers that ruled in good health for over 1500 years, some even exceeding the 3000 year mark. And especially in this age of advanced medicine and better living conditions, the life expectancy of hemet veolian has risen significantly.
